TNB, Primula Beach Hotel Collaborate In Green Tech To Reduce Carbon Footprint

A wholly owned subsidiary of TNB, GSPARX is actively contributing to the utility company’s Energy Transition with Hotel Primula Beach (Primula), Kuala Terengganu becoming the first customer in the hospitality industry to migrate to solar systems, recently.

GSPARX completed the installation project of a photovoltaic solar system on the roof of the hotel building last June to generate 315.5 kWp (kilowatt peak) of solar capacity, thus injecting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) elements into TNB and the country.

Therefore, the Chairman of the Terengganu State Infrastructure, Public Facilities, Utilities & Green Technology Committee, Dr. Mamad Puteh suggested that other tour operators also develop green technology in their respective hotels and resorts, in order to help preserve the environment.

“Based on the concept and principles of continuous sustainable development, I believe various steps and initiatives need to be taken by all parties in an effort to maintain the sustainability of green technology in order to provide long-term benefits to all,” he said in a speech at the Primula Solar System Opening Ceremony on 12 October.

Also present were the Chief Customer Officer (SME & Residential) of TNB’s Retail Division, Abdul Rahim Abd Jamil; Primula Board of Directors members, Dato’ Tun Ahmad Faisal Tun Abdul Razak and Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed @Harun as well as Primula General Manager, Suaibah Harun.

The installation of solar panels under the 21-year Renewable Energy Supply Agreement (SARE) allowed Primula to enjoy estimated savings of over RM1.49 million throughout the contract period through the generation of a total of 402,000 kWh of solar capacity per year.

This initiative is in line with the national aspiration towards a carbon neutral country by 2050 when it is able to avoid the emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the quantum of 285 metric tons per year, equivalent to planting 4,716 saplings for 10 years or carbon emissions from 62 vehicles per year on the road.

Tun Ahmad Faisal explained that Primula in the 2023 Budget Plan has outlined eight new initiatives including increasing the use of green technology which is the backbone of the development of the tourism sector and is widely practiced globally.

According to TNB’s representative, Abdul Rahim, Primula’s migration to Renewable Energy (RE) is in line with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources’ (KeTSA) agenda, which set a target of 31 percent RE in installed capacity in 2025 and 40 percent by 2035.

“The implementation of SARE with Primula is GSPARX’s first agreement with the hospitality industry in this country. This ‘Zero Capex’ model makes GSPARX an owner and investor in installed solar systems while our customers can enjoy electricity savings directly without making capital investments,” he added.
