TNB Sponsors and Drives the Development of Human Capital

More than 20,000 students have benefited from continuing their studies at institutions of higher learning through various educational funding from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), amounting to more than RM1.7 billion over the past 20 years since the establishment of Yayasan Tenaga Nasional (YTN) in 1993.

The funding is in the form of scholarships and grants known as TNB Prime Scholarship, TNB Shine Sponsorship, My Brighter Future (MyBF) Scholarship and most recently, TNB Special Scholarship for Orang Asli children.

TNB Chairman, Dato' Sri Hasan Arifin stressed that TNB is committed to supporting the government's efforts to help the people through various initiatives, especially developing the potential of the young generation and improving the people's standard of living through quality education opportunities.

"This education sponsorship is a golden opportunity for the recipient to pursue a discipline in a higher education institution while developing their personal potential, where the benefits are not only enjoyed by the student but also felt by the student's family members," he said in a speech at the YTN Education Sponsorship Award Presentation Ceremony for UNITEN students at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Campus, Bandar Muadzam Shah, Pahang, 22 October 2022.

This year, a total of 470 students enjoyed funding including 60 recipients of TNB Prime Scholarship, TNB Shine Sponsorship (30) and TNB Special Scholarship (10). Another 370 are MyBF recipients among the B40 low-income group.

According to Hasan, it is TNB's desire to make a meaningful contribution to community development and the best educational opportunities for the people, especially the low-income group in line with TNB's Energy Transition initiative which is based on Environmental Social and Governance (ESG).

"This year, TNB through YTN offers scholarships to Orang Asli children to attend diploma level studies in the field of accounting and business studies at UNITEN Muadzam Shah.

"I believe that if given the opportunity of sponsorship in addition to being guided by quality teaching staff, these children will be able to succeed and build a better life for their families and the entire community," he said.

YTN received more than 10,800 applications from SPM graduates this year to get the TNB Prime Scholarship and TNB Shine Sponsorship. Selection is based on academic excellence, leadership and active involvement in co-curricular activities.

For the TNB Special Scholarship, YTN collaborates with UNITEN and the Orang Asli Development Department to identify students who excelled in the SPM examination to be offered scholarships.
