China’s Zero Covid Policy Isn’t Going Away Soon

Chinese health officials have made it clear they will not swerve in the Zero covid policy and will continue to persevere with the dynamic clearing approach as soon as any cases appear.

The country is the last major economy sticking to the strategy of extinguishing outbreaks as they emerge, by imposing snap lockdowns, mass testing, and lengthy quarantines despite the disruptions to industry and international supply chain.

Stock markets climbed on Friday on rumours that Beijing could be revising its Zero policy and even might lay out a plan for a full reopening. But this was dampened when the National Health Commission issued a statement confirming that Beijing will unswervingly stick to its dynamic zero policy.

China recorded 3,659 new infections on Saturday with many reported being asymptomatic.
