TNB – Felda Collaborate In Green Technology Towards Reducing Carbon Footprint

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) through its wholly owned subsidiary, GSPARX Sdn Bhd (GSPARX) continues to receive the support of government agencies in intensifying transition energy, the latest being with Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA).

Through the Supply of Renewable Energy Agreement (SARE), GSPARX will install solar systems by way of rooftop photovoltaics in 14 premises owned by FELDA in Peninsular Malaysia with capacity totalling 1.6 MWp.

TNB’s Chief Retail Officer Kamal Arifin A. Rahman said, the green technology initiative will enhance the impact of environmentally friendly development and universal well-being in line TNB’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).

“This agreement also includes other smart energy solutions such as the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) when the quota is available, then the aspect of energy efficiency and energy monitoring system (EMS – Energy Monitoring System) in reducing carbon emissions,” he said at SARE signing ceremony at Menara FELDA on 7 November 2022.

SARE was signed by the TNB Retail Division Chief Customer Officer (Government & Large Business) Nasaruddin Mohd Zaini; GSPARX Sdn.Bhd. Managing Director Elmi Fairul Mashuri, and FELDA Director General Dato’ Amiruddin Abdul Satar. The ceremony was witnessed by FELDA Deputy Director General of Operations Izham Mustaffa and TNB Chief Strategy & Ventures Officer Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan.

The photovoltaic solar panel installation covers various buildings including the FELDA Tower, the Semarak Felda Institute as well as regional offices in the state of Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

According to Kamal, the installation work is scheduled to be completed in May 2023 and the initiative switching to renewable energy sources allows FELDA to enjoy estimated electricity bill savings of RM10.74 million for the 20-year period of the agreement.

He said, it is in line with the national aspiration towards a carbon neutral country by 2050, the initiative is able to reduce 1,321 metric tons of carbon dioxide in each equivalent year and greenhouse gas capture by 24,232 trees in a period of 10 years.

At the same time, FELDA’s adherence to ESG principles empowers it as an plantations and social mobility agency to further become a catalyst for adapting sustainable development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Izham stated that FELDA is confident that the project will be successful and a good start to sustainable cooperation in addition to supporting every effort towards realising TNB’s targets, thereby preserving the environment through effective generation of green energy.

“We welcome this kind of understanding especially supporting management cost saving measures in addition to being a pioneer in renewable energy which can renewed by FELDA,” he said.

To date, GSPARX has acquired 287 projects with commercial, industry and government organisations, generating a total of 232 MWp of solar capacity. Among them are Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad (MYDIN), Sime Darby Properties, Public Works Department (JKR), Dewan Kuala Lumpur City, Johor Bahru City Council, Seremban City Council, Council Ipoh City, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), TATI University College (TATIUC), Perak Transit, Lumileds, SKF Bearing, CJ Bio, Spirit Aerosystems, Primula Beach Hotel and SMART Penang.
