It is the season of the year, you might be ready to gather with friends and family members after two years of hiatus. But because gathering still increases chances of spreading cold, flu and COVID-19 viruses, it’s important to continue to take precautions.

Here are some advice for you by Mayo Clinic experts for sharing time safely during virus season:

Get vaccinated. If you’re able, get a flu shot each fall. And don’t forget to get recommended COVID-19 boosters.

Check community spread. Search online for “CDC COVID map” or “CDC flu map” to check virus spread rates in your area. If rates are high, consider canceling or delaying your gathering.

Skip it. If you’re feeling symptoms like a sore throat, cough or runny nose, stay home. Gather with loved ones when you’re feeling better and symptom-free.

Use fans. If your gathering is inside, try to increase circulation and force germs outside.

Open windows.
Turn on exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms while guests are over and for an hour after they leave.

If you have an HVAC system, switch it to the on position instead of auto while you have guests over. Make sure the filter is clean before the crowd gathers.

Face a fan out an open window to encourage germs outside. Even with windows closed, fans can help with air circulation. Just don’t have the fans blowing at people.

Plug in a portable air purifier if you have one.

Gather outside. If you live in an area where outdoor gatherings are possible even during colder months, consider taking the party outdoors.

Get tested. Before gathering with anyone outside of your household, take a home COVID-19 test. A positive result means that you have COVID-19 and should avoid gatherings.

Clean your hands. To clean your hands, use soap and water to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. You also can use hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. Apply to your palm then rub the sanitizer into the fronts and backs of your hands until they are dry.

Wear a mask. Masks help slow the spread of respiratory viruses, so wearing a mask can help protect yourself and others.

Wipe down frequently touched surfaces. Supply disinfecting wipes in the bathroom and near seating areas so guests can wipe down handles and tables.

Limit who serves. To reduce the number of people touching serving utensils, appoint a few servers who wear gloves. You also can pre-portion servings so guests just touch the one they’re taking. Encourage guests to wear masks around food-serving areas.
