Authorities To Haul TikTok Over Alleged May 13 Paid Video

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said it will continue to monitor the spread of 3 provocative video clips on TikTok and the news report that the video clips about the 1969 May 13 riot were actually paid content.

MCMC in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police said it has called the management of TikTok on the matter and to give an explanation immediately.

Videos of such nature can play on the sensitivity of the different races in the country, the May 13 incident is a black dot in Malaysia’s history, and those using it to incite provocation can be in deep trouble.

The regulator advises that the dissemination of provocative content with the intent to cause disharmony, hatred, prejudice, and feelings of people other, is an offense under the Penal Code (Act 574), which can be punished with a fine or imprisonment or- both if convicted. Any dissemination of content such as a video is an act of irresponsibility which is feared may cause disharmony, division, feelings of hatred or prejudice in related matters with religion and race.

MCMC and PDRM added that it will step up their efforts they are in curbing the spread of such videos which can disturb public order.
