Dry Taps For Christmas, Bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plant Yet To Resume

Air Selangor the water management agency for Selangor which halted water supply to 472 areas in Klang Valley, has yet to resolve the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plant which is still recording unhealthy pollutant levels.

While the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant (WTP) will resume its operation after a 0 threshold odour number (TON), the last of the treatment plant is yet to be sorted.

The agency said the operational resumption involves cleaning and water treatment processes which are estimated to be completed in 12 hours. 

“Following this, clean and safe treated water will then be distributed in stages to consumers in the affected areas,” said the agency in a statement on Facebook. Affected households around the area that Bukit Tampoi WTP will have to wait much longer during this Christmas day.

Air Selangor said the plant can only resume its operations after 0 TON reading is recorded three times consecutively. 

“Air Selangor and Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) will continue to monitor the quality of the river water in the area of the pollution incident closely to allow the Bukit Tampoi WTP to begin operation as soon as possible,” it said.

The affected areas are currently being supplied with water tankers with priority given to critical premises such as hospitals, clinics, dialysis centres and funerals during the unscheduled water supply disruption.

Yesterday, Air Selangor announced that the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi WTP were temporarily shut down following an odour pollution incident at Jenderam Hilir Raw Water Pump Station.

A total of 472 areas in five Selangor regions are expected to experience unscheduled water supply disruptions starting 7am today, namely Petaling (172 areas), Hulu Langat (54 areas), Sepang (196 areas), Putrajaya (23 areas) and Kuala Langat (27 areas).

Luas had identified a fluid spill that occurred in an accident involving a truck carrying a load of perfume oil along the Elite Highway in Negeri Sembilan to have caused the odour pollution detected at the Sungai Semenyih river flow.
