FBM KLCI Succumbs to Selling Pressure, Shed 1.44%, Whilst HSI Had Its Best Start for the New Year, Stayed Above 20,000 Point Level

Kuala Lumpur, January 3 – On the first trading day of 2023, Bursa Malaysia closed sharply lower on Tuesday with the benchmark index, FBM KLCI slid 21.50 points or -1.44% at 1,473.99. The main index was succumbed to intense selling pressure of the heavyweights, also the weak data of China’s manufacturing activities printed in December. Apparently, market participants were on jittery mood entering into the New Year, with heightened fear for slowing global economy.

Asian bourses ended in mixed today. Hong Kong stock exchange the best performer for the first trading day of 2023. The Hang Seng Index jumped 1.8 per cent to 20,145.29, ended above the 20,000-point level for the first time since August 26, lifting the market to a four-month high. The HSI was buoyed by tech stocks and Macau casino operators. The tech stocks climbed higher on hopes for a better regulatory conditions.

Shanghai’s SSE Composite also headed north today by gaining 0.88% to 3,116.51.

Australian S&P/ASX 200 Index slipped below the 7,000 point level by shredding 1.3% ,taking the negative cue from the Wall Street performance last Friday.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,488.54. The index fluctuated between 1,473.80– 1,488.54.

** 386 counters are gainers, 390 counters are unchanged, while 494 counters are decliners.

** Total volume of 3.720 billion shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 1.471 billion

** The Top 5 Gainers: HEXTECH (19.84, +2.78); AJI (13.44, +0.36); L&PBHD (0.545, +0.245); ATECH (1.99, +0.16); PENTA (4.57, +0.14)

** The Top 5 Losers: NESTLE (138.00, -2.00); PETDAG (22.24, -0.76); PMBTECH-LA (20.50, -0.50); PANAMY (22.50, -0.40); TENAGA (9.30, -0.33)

** The Top 5 Active: MMAG (0.02, -0.005); BORNOIL (0.02, -0.005); L&PBHD (0.545, +0.245); CITAGLB (0.33, +0.04); HSI-CLC (0.57, +0.07)

Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) down 0.2 point or -0.01% to 3,251.12; Hong Kong’s HSI jumped 363.88 points or +1.84% at 20,145.29; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index up 0.83 point or +0.003% at 26,094.50; Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index climbed 27.25 points or +0.88% at 3,116.51; Korea’s Kospi Index shed 6.99 points or -0.31% at 2,218.68; Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index dropped 92.50 points or -1.31% at 6,946.20.
