HP Helps Partners, Customers Alike Accelerate Sustainability Efforts

The road to reducing emissions and decarbonising the economy requires a spirited collaboration and sustained effort, particularly in adopting a circular economy approach that benefits the environment and creates economic opportunities.

Homing in on these needs, multi-national organisations such as HP have made distinct strides in leaving a lighter environmental footprint as they embarked on various efforts to play a leading role in the collection and recycling of plastic waste, while enabling various stakeholders to play a part.

HP’s culture of sustainability began decades ago when it formed HP Planet Partners in 1991, allowing it to focus on resources needed to make an impact on waste reduction. Over the course of the past 30+ years, this initiative has resulted in 1 million tons of products that have been either reused or recycled. The HP Planet Partners product return and recycling program has expanded to 76 countries and territories across the globe to date.

Keeping to its example, HP has carefully mapped out specific Sustainable Impact goals divided into three pillars: Planet, People, and Community, based on prioritising not only environmental protection and restoration, but also striving to protect and empower the people and communities where people live, work and conduct business.

Earlier this year, HP launched its “HP Supplies Impact Program” to enable channel partners to help commercial users increase their ink and toner cartridge recycling across Australia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore, with New Zealand and Thailand to follow.

The new initiative encourages businesses of all sizes to turn ad-hoc recycling events into a simple, seamless, continuous practice, helping HP customers and partners contribute more to sustainability efforts, while aligning with HP’s global mission to recycle 1.2 million tons of hardware and supplies by 2025.

HP Vice President and Head of Print Category, Greater Asia, Samir Shah said: “Our aim is to continually increase the collection and recycling of Original HP supplies across Southeast Asian countries, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand with sustainability today an absolute imperative for a better environment, society, and business.

“HP Supplies Impact makes sustainability more attainable for customers of all sizes and sectors,” he added.

Enabling everyone to play their part, HP makes the recycling process simpler for customers. The company is providing biodegradable green recycling bags to partners from the HP Amplify Impact program, who will then distribute these to customers during regularly scheduled visits.

Customers can deposit all used HP ink and toner cartridges into the recycling bags for convenient collection by HP partners, who then pass all collected supplies to the HP Planet Partners program, a global initiative to collect and recycle used products.

This streamlined process demonstrates HP’s commitment to increasing recycling for customers and reducing plastic pollution.

Recycle For a Tree

For every 30 ink or toner cartridges returned by a customer, HP is partnering with One Tree Planted, an environmental non-profit organisation, to plant a tree in Malaysia on behalf of the customer to help combat deforestation.

HP Head of Channels and Supplies, Greater Asia, David Tan, on the cause, said: “The strength and reach of our partner and customer network are a huge asset and by bringing our partners with us on this journey, we can work together to create a more sustainable and just world.

“HP Supplies Impact helps the Amplify Impact partners forge a unique movement to deliver long-term sustainability while differentiating themselves competitively”, he added.

As part of its broader sustainability strategy, HP has set an ambitious goal to enrol at least 50% of HP Amplify partners in the HP Amplify Impact Program by 2025. To date, 20% of HP’s partners have signed the HP Amplify Impact pledge, exceeding the target of 10% for the first year of the program.

A voluntary initiative within the global HP Amplify Program, the program provides more than 10,000 partners with the opportunity to join in on the efforts to generate meaningful impact across climate action, human rights, and digital equity.

HP is a technology company that believes one thoughtful idea has the power to change the world. Its product and service portfolio of personal systems, printers, and 3D printing solutions helps bring these ideas to life.
