Selangor Targets Becoming A Metropolitan City By 2030

Selangor has plans to become a metropolitan city in at least the next six to seven years, said State Chief Minister Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, he added the plan can be achieved by combining four big cities namely Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and soon Klang.

The MB expects in the next one to two years the Klang Municipal Council can also become a city and from there Selangor will have four ‘connected cities’ in one state. “I hope we can arrange equality in terms of administration and implement beneficial management and give good to all he remarked. To become a metropolis there are conditions such as population density and certain needs but in terms of imagination in the future.

However, Amirudin explained that Klang has certain challenges that need to be proven to be elevated to city status because approximately 30 percent of the district is still in the village category.

“It does not mean that a village cannot become a city because Subang Jaya also has Kampung Tengah, Kampung Bukit Lanchong, and Kampung Sri Aman but the size of the development is planned. “But in Klang we think there are still villages that we can count as traditional villages. So, we hope that Klang can improve it, not just turning villages into towns or cities, but improving facilities and services,” he said.

At the same time, Amirudin also welcomed Kuala Lumpur to join Selangor to become a metropolitan city in the future. “We have a bigger city than Kuala Lumpur and if Kuala Lumpur wants to join us that’s a good thing, we can become the biggest Klang Valley,” he said.

The term “metropolitan city” means a city within a metropolitan area which is the central city of such area, as defined and used by the Office of Management and Budget, or any other city, within a metropolitan area, which has a population of fifty thousand or more.
