Telco’s Can Offer Cheaper Rates Than Determined By Government

The Unity Internet Package announced by the government is just a baseline for telecommunications companies in providing the service to their customers, Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry always welcomes telecommunication companies, to offer better internet services at lower prices.

“This is a policy announcement, if the companies want to give a better offer it is up to them, but at the moment our baseline is RM69 per month for fixed broadband and RM5 per month for prepaid mobile internet. “I hope telecommunication companies and broadband internet service providers will examine the response and provide better packages,” he said. The Ministry recently announced the Fixed Broadband Unity Package at a lower price, to help the B40 group, veterans, the disabled, and the elderly. The service is provided with a speed of 30 Mbps along with unlimited data with a charge of only RM69 per month, as well as a subscription contract for 24 months.

Previously Fahmi announced the Mobile Internet Prepaid Unity Data Plan at RM5 per month and three times faster, which was available since February. Meanwhile, Fahmi, who is also a Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, said his party would also provide a database to facilitate telecommunications companies to make references and determine those who are eligible to enjoy the package facilities. He said at the moment, the package, which is in line with the Malaysia Madani concept, is targeted to help the B40 group, but the telecommunications company can also provide the facility to the subordinate M40 group if there is a need.

We are also extending this facility (unity package) to the elderly, disabled, and veterans, so they will also be able to enjoy connectivity without the worry of a high internet bills.
