FBM KLCI Tumbled 0.95% Whilst Asian Bourses Stabilised

Kuala Lumpur, February 7 – Bursa Malaysia closed the Tuesday trading off in red with the benchmark FBM KLCI dipped 14.09 points or -0.95% at 1,476.38. The index widened its losses towards the end of the trading session and narrowed its losses in the last 30 minutes of the afternoon trading session.

The index was dragged by selling pressure, a catching-up after the regional markets ended in steep losses yesterday.

The regional peers remained firm on Tuesday after yesterday’s steep losses, while the U.S dollar remained elevated as investors considered the prospects for interest rates to remain higher for longer in many developed economies.

Australia’s S&P/ASX200 was traded higher before of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s rate decision. The benchmark index slumped into negative note after the official cash rate was raised by 25 bps and ended lower by 0.46% at 7,504.10.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 0.36% as it rebounded from three days of steep losses. The main index was supported by technology heavyweights Tencent, Alibaba Group and Baidu. Baidu rallied over 10% after the search engine operator said it will complete testing a ChatGPT-styled artificial intelligence project called “Ernie Bot” by March.


** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,487.82. The index fluctuated between 1,472.67- 1,487.99.

** 302 counters are gainers, 359 counters are unchanged, while 730 counters are decliners.

** Total volume of 5.240 billion shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 3.028 billion

Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) retreated 7.92 points or -0.23% to 3,378.01; Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index (HSI) gained 76.54 points or +0.36% at 21,298.70; Japan’s Nikkei 225 index down 8.18 points or -0.03% at 27,685.47; Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index collected 9.40 points or +0.29% at 3,248.09; Korea’s Kospi Index added 13.52 points or +0.55% at 2,451.71; Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index declined 34.90 points or -0.46% at 7,504.10.
