Mainstreaming 5G Technology Towards Sustainable Living

FTTH Council Asia-Pacific convenes the country’s telecommunication (telco) industry players at Malaysia FIBERTalk 2023 conference to discuss industry updates and address Fiber to The Home challenges and opportunities in enabling 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) for Smart Cities.

Bawani Selvaratnam, Chief Development Officer of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, joined top executives from Maxis Bhd, Telekom Malaysia and Celcom, among others, to be part of discussions on Smart Connectivity Masterplan for Resilient Smart City, Best Practices for FTTH Development and Fiber for a Sustainable Future.

They also explored the role of Fiber in the roadmap to 5G by taking into consideration of the necessary backhaul challenges and requirements needed to deploy 5G in the development of Smart City.

“Telcos continue to evolve by capitalising on new technologies that enable more advanced solutions to meet the needs of the world while keeping customers’ convenience in the forefront of their efforts. The conference is an ideal avenue for knowledge sharing and networking to pave the way for collaborations to drive 5G and IoT developments for sustainable living,” said FTTH Council Asia-Pacific President Mr. Venkatesan Babu.

As part of key developments of Smart Cities, next generation technologies such as 5G and IoT are emerging. The Cities require a lot of cross-communication behind the scenes, as well as a lot of sensors communicating with one another. This necessitates real-time communication over low-latency internet, which is not possible without Fiber.

The sideline activities of the Malaysia FIBERTalk 2023 include the Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony between FTTH Council Asia- Pacific and Malaysia Smart Cities Alliance Association (MSCA), which enables FTTH Council.

Asia-Pacific to leverage on the latter’s network of members to collectively drive collaborations in the development of Smart Cities. This involves exchange of knowledge, expertise, technologies and know-how to provide sustainable long-term telecommunication solutions to develop Smart Cities.

The MoU also entails collaborations in capacity building for sustainable and smart cities project performance evaluation, as well as exploring potential large market reach in IR 4.0 technologies-based education and training segments.

The FTTH Council Asia-Pacific is a non-profit organization established in 2005 in Singapore. The organization is building on the success of its sister organizations in the United State and Europe to educate the industry and the general public on the opportunities and benefits of FTTH solutions. FTTH Council Asia-Pacific members represent all areas of broadband industries, including telecommunications, computing, networking, system integration, engineering and content-provider companies, as well as traditional telecommunications service providers, utilities and municipalities.

MSCA is a platform established for the council members to deliberate on Smart City’s issues and challenges and create opportunities for networking among the stakeholders. MSCA consists of the government and its agencies, smart cities services and solution providers, industry players, and academia.
