Touch n Go Loses Grip On 5 Highway Toll Payment From September

In efforts to make payment systems at toll booths agnostic, the Public Works Ministry has identified several highways which will see the implementation of an open payment system by this September.

This is to allow users to pay tolls not tied to just Touch n Go but also be able to use debit and credit cards. Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the highways were Sungai Besi Expressway, the Baru Pantai Expressway, the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway, the Guthrie Corridor Expressway and the Penang Bridge.

“The implementation of this open payment system is one of the initial initiatives as a transition towards the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system which is being actively worked on,” he said in a post on Facebook today. Nanta said the proof of concept (POC) of the MLFF will be carried out before the end of October and the locations involved are being negotiated, before being finalized in the near future to evaluate the MLFF system before it is implemented for all highways. He said the full implementation of the MLFF will be implemented in phases by the third quarter of 2024 at the latest.

The Minister also explained that through the implementation of MLFF, an open payment system will be implemented for toll collection for all highways in Malaysia, and open up opportunities for more e-wallet providers to participate, so there will no longer be a monopoly by Touch N Go. “Healthy competition will exist between industry players, which will open up more options for highway users to make toll payments, thus providing them with convenience. “I hope this effort will get the cooperation of all parties and provide comprehensive benefits to all, especially the people and highway users in this country,” he said.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when answering a question from a participant in the youth dialogue program ‘Meet Anwar’ at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center announced that the government will reconsider the Touch N Go monopoly in transport and roads.
