AMD Growing Its Global Business Services And Engineering Presence In Malaysia

AMD has announced plans to expand its global business services and engineering presence in Malaysia with the construction of a new, state-of-the art office space and lab facility in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

The building, called “GBS by the Sea”, will include approximately 209,000 square feet of new office and engineering lab space to support its growth globally and is expected to be complete in 2024. Developed by the state-owned development agency, Penang Development Corporation (PDC), “GBS by the Sea” includes a 9-storey office building and a 6-storey multi-level carpark with a total net lettable floor space of approximately 300,000 square feet.

“Penang has played a pivotal role in both the semiconductor ecosystem globally and in the assembly and test operations for AMD leadership technology and products for more than 50 years,” said Dato’ Devinder Kumar, Executive Vice President at AMD. Our new facility in Bayan Lepas will increase our total headcount and capability to support growth across our global business services and engineering expertise.”

AMD has been an active part of the Malaysian semiconductor ecosystem since 1972, when the company established its first assembly manufacturing facility in Penang. Since then, AMD Malaysia has grown to more than 800 employees spanning two Global Shared Services facilities in Penang and Cyberjaya that support AMD employees, customers and suppliers worldwide. In June 2022, AMD strategic partner and supplier TF-AMD Microelectronics Sdn. Bhd. announced a RM 2 billion capital investment through the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Penang, expected to create more than 3,000 new jobs in Malaysia
