Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur’s ‘Rooted In Nature’ Initiative

In line with the ongoing Shangri-La group sustainable, environment and biodiversity efforts, Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur is committed to creating environmentally responsible and resource-efficient facilities to protect the environment. The “Rooted in Nature” initiative was launched in 2014 to reduce environmental impact by supporting local agriculture, purchasing chemical-free produce, and sourcing free-range, organic, and fair-trade products where possible. The “Rooted in Nature” campaign links to the Mother Earth ideal. This project incorporates the understanding that most of our food comes from her bodies of land and water to the natural order of things and reduces the environmental damage.

This year, Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur embarked on an Urban Farming initiative with CityFarm Malaysia in a Hydroponic farming technology collaboration. Urban farming can provide proven environmental benefits, as it reduces the local carbon footprint as food is consumed within the same geographical location. Both outdoor and indoor hydroponic gardens incorporate similar Nutrient Film Techniques (NFT).

For the Lemon Garden restaurant, an indoor hydroponic method is implemented, with a gravitational water flow system being used as a stand-alone reservoir. This method’s key element is allowing the nutrient solution to flow over to the roots, which enables the plants to get sufficient oxygen. It takes only two weeks for the luscious green lettuce and herbs to grow to harvestable size. At this point, the culinary team selects the produce to incorporate into their menus. The varieties being produced include numerous lettuce and herbs for food preparation. The next cycle is generated by cultivating seed from the rootstock, thus creating the next generation of self-sustainable supply.

Their commitment to initiating this program and promoting the finest locally and ethically sourced ingredients is part of our unique culinary offerings. Guests can identify Rooted in Nature menu items by spotting the pea shoot logo highlighted next to the menu description for all restaurant menus.

“We believe that travel should be enjoyable and responsible, and our ‘Rooted in Nature’ initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability and conservation,” said Sachin Tyagi, Resident manager at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur. “We hope our guests will join us in this important effort to protect the planet and preserve it for future generations.”.

“At Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, we are proud to lead the way in sustainable tourism and dedicate some time and effort to creating a positive impact in our communities. Through initiatives like “Rooted in Nature,” we are working towards a more sustainable future and a healthier planet for all.”
