MRANTI Speed Up The Acceleration Of 5G Enterprise Innovation

In driving enterprise 5G adoption forward, the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI) today (April 7) brought together 20 key stakeholders to discuss pertinent issues, as well as to connect and collaborate on initiatives to progress the design, development and deployment of industry and enterprise 5G innovations in order to raise Malaysia’s competitiveness.

With Malaysia’s ambition to raise its competitiveness and be a regional leader in 5G, new 5G enabled ports, smart hospitals, automated vehicles, smart manufacturing facilities and more must be designed from today, especially as neighbouring countries have already deployed such industry-focussed solutions to market.

2023 E-wallet Assistance Now Extended To All Students In The Country: Anwar

The government will extend the 2023 e-Wallet assistance to all students in the country. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this is so that the aid can be used by those groups.

“I will decide that e-Wallet can be used by all students. Okay, satisfied,” he said briefly at a dialogue session with students of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)…

Singapore Car Buyers Hit With Record High COE Premiums Again

Singapore car buyers who will need the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) when purchasing their vehicles saw premiums close higher almost across the board in the latest bidding exercise on Wednesday (Apr 5), with Category A and B prices breaking records yet again.

For Category A cars, or those 1,600cc and below with horsepower not exceeding 130bhp, premiums closed at S$96,501, up from the previous high of S$93,503 in the last exercise.

PETRONAS Launches First Advanced Material-Based Corrosion Protection Tech

PETRONAS today (April 5) launched a breakthrough product to address the perennial corrosion-related pain points that compromise asset integrity.  Formulated using graphene material, which is an ultra-high barrier advanced material, ProShield+, is a paint additive for steel structures.

Developed in-house, ProShield+, has been proven to strengthen coatings’ resistance against harsh weather conditions and protect assets from corroding agents. Overall, the formulation contains three times higher water barrier properties than conventional epoxy paint and helps to improve adhesion as well as resistance against abrasion and ultraviolet (UV). It has also shown up to three times more improvement in abrasion resistance than conventional epoxy paint.

Positioning Malaysia as a Strategic Gateway to ASEAN: Proposal, Challenges and Opportunities

International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz’s proposal to position Malaysia as a strategic gateway for investment into ASEAN has received criticism from some quarters, which, in my opinion, is misguided. 

Senior fellow at the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research Geoffrey Williams dismissed the proposal as “no longer relevant” and lacking “real vision for the future”, while economist Barjoyai Bardai emphasised the need for sustained commitment and resources to make the proposal a success.

Johor To Receive RM80 Billion Investment From China, Biggest Ever

Johor is expected to receive the biggest economic spillover from the RM170 billion investment brought in from China as a result of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to the country.

State Investment, Trade and Consumer Affairs Exco, Lee Ting Han, said that of the total value of the investment, most companies are expected to land in Johor to explore various fields including petrochemicals.

Vincent Tan No Longer Berjaya Land’s Substantial Shareholder

Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun offloaded his 1.42% stake in Berjaya Land Bhd which has expelled him as its substantial shareholder.

A local bourse filing on Monday (April 3), Berjaya Land stated that the stake comprising 69.89 million shares — 25 million shares or 0.508% held directly, and 44.89 million shares or 0.912% held under Berjaya VTCY Sdn Bhd — was sold via direct business transactions on March 30.

Commentary: Impact of Oil Prices on the Malaysian Economy

Opec and its allies, including Russia, agreed on Sunday to widen crude oil production cuts to 3.66 million barrels per day (bpd) or 3.7% of global demand. The surprise announcement helped push up prices by US$5 (about RM22) per barrel to above US$85 per barrel.

The impact of oil prices on the macroeconomy has long been a topic of interest to economic researchers. Overall, a significant amount of empirical research finds that oil price surges result in significant negative effects on oil importing economies.
