Wholesale & Retail Trade Sales Recorded RM134.3 Billion In February 2023, Says Stats Dept

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM134.3 billion in February 2023, registered  a  growth  of  14.7 per cent year-on-year. The  positive  growth  was  contributed  by  all  sub-sectors,  namely  Motor  Vehicles  36.1 per cent,  Retail  Trade  19.2 per cent and Wholesale Trade 5.9 per cent.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) said today (April 11) that in terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 10.6 per cent year-on-year to record 145.4 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Motor Vehicles 24.0 per cent, Retail Trade 13.9 per cent and Wholesale Trade 3.4 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 5.5 per cent month-on-month in February 2023.

DOSM

DoSM’s Wholesale & Retail Trade, February 2023 release cited specifically, the Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM59.1 billion in February 2023 with a growth of 5.9 per cent as against February 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 15.8 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 10.0 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 9.9 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 9.0 per cent and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 6.1 per cent (Chart 3). For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased -2.0 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 130.4 points, expanded 3.4 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (13.0%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (11.1%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.8%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (8.4%) as in Chart 4. Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched up 4.7 per cent month-on-month.

The Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 19.2 per cent as compared to February 2022. Chart 5 shows that among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (45.9%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (24.2%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (21.1%). Compared with January 2023, sales of this sub-sector decreased -2.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 13.9 per cent to 166.6 points as compared to February 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (42.1%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (20.5%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (20.4%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (17.9%) as presented in Chart 6. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 3.3 per cent as against January 2023.
