Luno Malaysia Announces Leadership Changes

Luno announced a series of leadership updates.

  • David Low will be taking a career break and stepping down as APAC General Manager on 15th May 2023, a position he had been serving since August 2018. He first joined Luno Malaysia as Country Manager in early 2018.
  • Aaron Tang will assume the role of APAC General Manager starting 15th May 2023, having joined Luno Malaysia as Marketing and Community Lead in 2018. He was most recently Country Manager for Luno Malaysia, having served in this position since August 2019.
  • Scarlett Chai will take over as new Country Manager for Luno Malaysia effective immediately, having previously served as Marketing & Partnerships Lead from 2019-2021, and then as Marketing Manager, a role she has assumed since July 2021.

David was a pioneer in Malaysia’s digital asset space, and was instrumental in advocating for trust and regulation in the cryptocurrency space since March 2018. Regulation on cryptocurrency was later introduced by the government in January 2019, with the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) as the supervising authority. David has also led Luno’s regional expansion from Malaysia by obtaining regulatory approvals and launching Luno’s businesses in other APAC markets.

David Low, the outgoing APAC General Manager shared, “It has been a privilege to be given the opportunity to lead Luno’s APAC businesses. After 5 years, I’ve decided to take a career break and pass the baton to the next line of leadership. Both Aaron and Scarlett have been an integral part of Luno Malaysia’s team. I look forward to seeing them continue advancing the growth and development of the digital assets landscape – for Aaron through his expanded regional remit, and for Scarlett in her new capacity as Country Manager for the Malaysian market.”

As part of the pioneering team in Malaysia, Aaron has been working hand-in-hand with David in building Luno’s local presence, and in leading and obtaining Luno Malaysia’s regulatory approval from the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). He has since expanded the local team to more than 60 employees, with over 800,000 Malaysians currently signed up with the platform.

As Luno’s APAC General Manager, Aaron will be tasked with the strategic overview of Luno’s market operations at the regional level, in addition to growing business in core markets across the APAC region. He looks to build stronger bridges between the world of traditional finance with the world of digital assets — in a safe and regulated way.

“As someone who has always believed in the potential of digital assets to empower people of all walks of life in their financial journeys, it has been a truly rewarding experience to have served the Malaysian market since 2018. I am grateful to have had this opportunity, and I look forward to growing Luno’s business at the regional level, from building closer relationships with industry stakeholders to advancing awareness efforts for investors across the APAC markets,” said Aaron.

Taking over from Aaron is Scarlett Chai, who has built Luno’s brand awareness and established various partnership programs during her 4 years in leading Luno Malaysia’s marketing initiatives. Some of her key achievements include building Luno’s affiliates program, leading the development of Women-in-Crypto – a community for women to learn about crypto, and the most recent leading Luno’s largest integrated brand campaign, Move with Luno.

Additionally, Scarlett has also contributed on the business operations front in leading key projects such as the application of Malaysia’s regulatory approval, and integration of Luno with banking and payment partners.

When asked about the opportunity to lead Luno Malaysia, Scarlett mentioned, “I am excited to continue furthering my career with Luno, and to continue growing the Malaysian digital assets landscape in such a significant capacity. I hope to extend on the work that both David and Aaron have contributed to, and look forward to expanding awareness, education, and accessibility of crypto investing for all Malaysians.”
