Please Look Into Price Of Rubber, Says Smallholders Association

The National Association of Smallholder Farmers of Malaysia (NASH) asked the government to examine the issues faced by smallholder rubber farmers in more depth, especially in relation to the low price of the commodity.

The deputy president of the association, Adzmi Hassan, said that attention to the issue is also necessary considering that the income of small rubber farmers with the price of the commodity is currently disproportionate to the current cost of living.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim indeed understands the people and has a mission to reduce the cost of living of the people and hopes that things like this can be maintained in the future.

“Nevertheless, let’s not think about one-time aid… we need to find a way to raise the price of rubber as well. For example, recently announced by the government regarding the allocation of rubber roads, we do not know how the allocation will be translated in the form of price increases,” he said.

Adzmi said the rubber road was a good proposal to help smallholders and if it could increase the demand for rubber and make the price of the commodity material increase, he would welcome it.

“It is hoped that the government’s proposed rubber road can speed up its implementation a little. If the price of rubber can be increased to RM4 per kilogram, there will be many tappers scrambling to tap rubber because they (tappers) are less enthusiastic than the current rubber price of around RM2.90,” he said.

In the 2023 budget, the government agreed to increase the monsoon contribution of smallholders from RM600 to RM800 for a period of four months to ease the burden borne by the 320,000 groups, involving an allocation of RM256 million.
