TNB’s RE Efforts Through GSparx Garners Local And International Support

TNB’s wholly-owned subsidiary, GSPARX Sdn Bhd has successfully signed1,926 rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) installation agreements at residential houses, and public and commercial buildings throughout Peninsula Malaysia with a total capacity of 271.9 megawatts (MW).

President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Indera Ir. Baharin Din described the achievement as very encouraging because TNB has succeeded in raising public awareness about clean energy through the utilisation of building rooftops in support of a carbon-neutral country by 2050. Baharin added that TNB’s ongoing efforts are getting more support from business leaders
including the most recent collaboration with Asia’s largest retailer from Japan, AEON through AEON CO. (M) Bhd, which operates the group’s supermarket chain in Malaysia.

“As a large company from the country of the rising sun that always sets high standards, AEON’s readiness to accept TNB’s offer to install solar panels is a reflection of its confidence in the quality of service provided by TNB through GSPARX with a business model capable of increasing AEON’s added value,” he said. Through the Supply Agreement with Renewable Energy (SARE) signed recently on 12 April, GSPARX is collaborating with AEON for the installation of rooftop solar PV systems across 40 AEON and AEON BiG shopping malls nationwide.

The installation agreement is the largest to date for GSPARX with a total capacity of 78 MWp, which contributes to TNB’s RE capacity, bringing the total at 3,907MW, almost 50% of the 8,300 MW target in the utility company’s journey towards net zero carbon, in line with the country’s energy transition commitment.

According to Baharin, in addition to the GSPARX’s offer that enables AEON to generate its own energy through solar installation systems with zero capital expenditure, it also benefits the hypermarket chain by saving between 15 to 30 per cent in electricity costs. “Other public and commercial organisations are encouraged to follow in the footsteps of AEON, which has implemented energy saving initiatives and with everyone’s participation, we can play a role in developing a more sustainable future for the well-being of life together,” he added.

Baharin said that as TNB and other companies manage large-scale solar farms in efforts to increase the nation’s renewable energy capacity, GSPARX, together with consumers, will play a role in providing added value by generating energy from sunlight from the building rooftops.

To date, GSPARX has secured 378 projects with commercial, industrial & government organisations, generating 262 MWp of solar capacity.
