Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad filed a RM150 million defamation suit against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for claiming that he enriched himself, his family and was a racist.

The lawsuit was filed by him at the Shah Alam High Court through the law firm Messrs. Law Practice of Rafique, on March 3, naming Anwar as the sole defendant.

The 97-year-old former Prime Minister is demanding general damages of RM50 million and exemplary damages of RM100 million. The defamation suit is related to the Prime Minister’s speech at a special national congress last March.

Dr Mahathir claimed that Anwar’s statement in his speech at the congress meant that he was hoarding property for his family and that the loss of Malay property, assets or shares was related to his family’s property, assets or shares.

He said some of Anwar’s statements in the speech were malicious slander and accusations aimed at bringing down and damaging his reputation and image as a statesman and former Prime Minister.

According to Dr Mahathir in his statement of claim, the entire program was broadcasted live, among others through the ‘Facebook live’ session of Anwar’s own Facebook account and on the Parti Keadilan Rakyat YouTube channel.
