A fire which broke out at the old building of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya was successfully brought under control at 11.08 this morning.

Firefighters had already packed their equipment and were winding back the hoses at 11.44am but remained on standby at the location for any eventuality.

Selangor Assistant Director of Operations of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Hafisham Mohd Noor said the fire raged across the fourth and fifth floors of the building.

“Five fire engines with personnel and water tanks from several stations were deployed to the location as soon as the call was received at 10.39am.The fire was successfully controlled and no casualties were reported,” he said in a statement today (May 22).

No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Hafisham said.

A 1-minute video showing thick black smoke billowing from a section of the building has since gone viral on social media.

In February 2018, a blaze destroyed about 40% of the building in Jalan Gasing.

According to the Fire and Rescue Services Department then, the 2018 fire incident was caused by a spark caused during maintenance work that ignited flammable cladding panels used on the building’s exterior.
