Govt Approves MSM And CSR Application To Produce Clear Refined White Sugar

The government agreed to the application of two local sugar producing companies, MSM Malaysia Holdings Berhad and Central Sugars Refinery Sdn. Bhd. (CSR) to produce clear refined white sugar.

The Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said the permission to sell refined white sugar will come into effect today (May 25).

However, he stressed, the sale of this sugar cannot replace the existing supply of refined white sugar (coarse and refined).

“The government agrees with this application because clear refined white sugar will give consumers a choice other than the existing refined white sugar (coarse and refined).

“The Government has also instructed MSM and CSR to continue producing existing refined white sugar (coarse and refined) at the current quantity sufficient for the retail market at the Government-controlled price of RM2.85 per kilogram (coarse) and RM2.95 per kilogram ( fine),” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, he said, sugar producing companies can be taken action if they do not produce sufficient supply of existing refined white sugar (coarse and refined) in the market.

“Similarly to any wholesaler and retailer who imposes conditional purchase or does not sell existing refined white sugar (coarse and refined) to customers.

“KPDN takes this opportunity to invite Malaysian Madani consumers to monitor and control the consumption of sugar for the sake of health as recommended by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

“KPDN also invites consumers to work together to ensure that the supply of sugar in the market is always sufficient through feedback and reports,” he said.
