RM5.5 Billion For Selangor To Have Sufficient Water Reserve By 2030

Selangor aims to have a sufficient water reserve margin with a total capacity of 8,765 million litres per day by 2030, says Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said the construction projects of the Sungai Rasau water treatment plant (WTP), Langat 2 WTP, and Labohan Dagang WTP are part of the efforts to ensure there is a sufficient and sustainable water supply to meet the needs of the people of Selangor and the Klang Valley.

“With the WTPs, we will have an overall sufficient reserve and the ability to ensure uninterrupted water supply during pollution incidents and disruptions.

The construction of all the WTPs will increase the capacity by 41.5 percent by 2030, with a water production capacity of up to 8,765 MLD. The MB further explained that the first phase of the Labohan Dagang WTP project is now completed and operational, ensuring that Kuala Langat and parts of Sepang would not be affected should there be pollution in Sungai Selangor.

The second phase (Labohan Dagang WTP) will add a capacity of 200 MLD with an estimated cost of RM480 million and is expected to be completed by 2029. The Sungai Rasau WTP is the largest and most advanced plant in Southeast Asia, with the ability to produce clean water supply of 1,400 MLD, the project is to ensure water supply is secured for districts in PJ, Kuala Langat and Shah Alam.

The first phase costs RM3.42 billion, and RM2.12 billion for the second phase making it the largest operational water treatment plant with a capacity of more than 1,400 MLD and also the most advanced in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

“The high cost of the construction is not only for the construction processes and modern technologies, such as ozone but also land acquisition,” he added.

Amirudin said that the Rasau Water Supply Scheme is an additional initiative to ensure the sustainability of the water supply in Selangor, the Klang Valley and Putrajaya, benefiting some eight million residents.

“The construction of this latest water treatment plant is a significant milestone in the operation and management of Air Selangor.

“This is also the state government’s effort to ensure the sustainability of water supply to the state and the country,” he said.

Located in Kampung Seri Cheeding, the first phase of the Rasau Water Supply Scheme project, expected to be completed in 2025, is capable of producing 700 MLD of water supply.

Meanwhile, the second phase of the project, expected to be completed by 2030, aims to increase the production of clean water to 1,400 MLD.

The scheme consists of components of the water service system, including the construction of the Sungai Rasau WTP and the water distribution system.

Under this scheme, the respective plant is equipped with ozone treatment processes to ensure that the water quality always meets the standards set by the Ministry of Health.

The scheme includes nine former tin mining ponds covering an area of 489 hectares, which serve as the first dual-function Takungan Air Pinggiran Sungai (TAPS) in the country, capable of supplying water and flood mitigation.

The Federal government has channelled an allocation of RM1.18 billion for TAPS.
