Workers in the tech sector and chefs are the least likely workers to switch careers, according to the latest data from leading jobs portal Indeed.
Through an in-depth analysis of resume data uploaded to the platform, Indeed examined the search behavior of workers, revealing fascinating patterns and highlighting professions that inspire remarkable loyalty, making career transitions more challenging.
Among the findings, the study found that certain occupations exhibited lower rates of career change. Notably, workers in the tech sector were among the least likely to consider a career change in 2022. A mere 17% of job seekers identifying as full-stack developers or Java developers clicked on positions outside the tech sector. Similarly, senior software engineers (20%), front-end developers (21%), and Android developers (25%) displayed a notable reluctance to venture beyond their immediate professions. These findings suggest a strong sense of professional commitment and contentment within the tech community.
Another industry where professionals displayed a remarkable degree of loyalty was the culinary field. Among sous chefs, only 25% of clicks were for jobs outside the food preparation sector, while head chefs demonstrated a similar commitment, with just 26% of clicks directed towards non-culinary positions. This data underscores the dedication and passion that chefs have for their craft.
A common thread among jobs with low outclick rates is the high barrier to entry, requiring workers to accumulate considerable experience, education, and training to establish their careers. This long-term commitment may signify the passion that these workers have for their chosen professions, the sacrifices they have made, or a desire not to “waste” their investments by leaving the sector.
“Career changes are a natural part of the professional journey, driven by various factors such as higher pay, career advancement, personal experiences, or external circumstances like redundancy, health, or relocation. Understanding these dynamics is essential for job seekers and employers as they navigate the evolving job market landscape,” said Callam Pickering, APAC Senior Economist at Indeed.
