World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur: An Iconic Idea Exchange Towards Nation Building

Group Managing Director, Dato’ Sri Dr Haji Irmohizam Ibrahim

Our heritage is what we inherit from the past, to value and enjoy in the present and to preserve and pass on to future generations. As part of Malaysia’s national heritage, let’s consider a notion to enhance a heritage which has been a cornerstone of creation and exchange of ideas that has advanced the economy over the last four decades. In its essence, the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) has over delivered on this notion as it’s definitely a global and Malaysia’s exchange for economic development by providing space for innovation and progress.

The heritage then becomes a symbol of an era, which not only existed in the past but both for the present and well into the future. The visionary behind WTCKL is its Group Managing Director, Dato’ Sri Dr Haji Irmohizam Ibrahim, whose long list of credentials places him as the leader on the beat to drive higher value towards WTCKL to achieve world recognition.

Dr Ibrahim brings a wealth of diverse experiences to the table, having served as a lawyer, Special Officer, and an advisor to the Prime Minister and several other Cabinet Ministers. He has also been extensively involved in education and previously held the position of Member of Parliament. Furthermore, he has taken on directional roles in multiple companies.

Notably, he was the First Malaysian to be appointed as the Chairman of Conferences & Exhibitions (C&E) Member Advisory Council (MAC) World Trade Centers Association (WTCA).

Besides his string of academic qualifications, Dr Irmohizam was presented with a certificate of High Impact Presentations acknowledged by Dale Carnegie Training, certificate of Marketing Strategy in a Digital World Building High-Impact Plans, certificate of Corporate Directors Training Programme Fundamental 2.0, certificate of 10th ASEAN Senior Management Development Program of the Harvard Business School, certificate of Oxford Executive Leadership Programme of the Oxford University and certificate of Open Water Diving License Professional Association of Diving Instructions (PADI).

Dr Irmohizam shared his direction on WTCKL being a dominant global centre with BusinessToday recently and the path towards gaining worldwide recognition in becoming an iconic convention centre that will also pay tribute to the building’s history and culture. With a sense of determination, Dr Irmohizam said WTCKL has evolved into a symbol of social transformation, of economic and cultural revolutions, of ruptures with the past to create a stream of knowledge into the future.

It is not merely a building; it is an ode to Malaysia’s unwavering spirit, a beacon that illuminates the path to a future steeped in the riches of the past. It’s important how WTCKL has become visible over time, in order to be relevant and reliable. The whole team needs to build the site, not just for Malaysians and for generations to come, but for the world to see. Dr Irmohizam said it’s not only just about having an event space but it has to be tuned into a destination, especially for tourists, to look and feel the history of the nation.

The ecosystem of this building in terms of the structure, landmarks and location can create a centre of learning to inspire the younger generation to set their ambitions and future. For WTCKL firstly, this building is a Malaysian asset; secondly, this building expresses Malaysian culture and thirdly, this building has a history of creating Historical Malaysian memories to ensure that Malaysia becomes a global Business Events landmark for the World Economic Forum and World Expo destination in future.

A GRAND, FOUR DECADE OLD HISTORY

This iconic building is steeped in tradition, boasting a heritage intertwined with the legacy of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who championed the nation’s liberation from British colonialism.

WTCKL is a beacon of architectural marvel that encompasses not only physical grandeur but also the weight of history that has shaped a nation. Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, had paved the way for the realisation of the architectural masterpiece since The complex began to take shape in 1981, culminating in its completion in 1984 under the guidance of the esteemed architect, the late Dato’ Dr Ikmal Hisham Albakri.

Central to WTCKL’s cultural significance is the mesmerising Jejak Merdeka, a corridor that weaves through time, chronicling the journey of Malaysia towards independence from British rule. Since its inception in 1985, Jejak Merdeka has served as a historical compass, tracing the nation’s path to sovereignty. Along its walls are portraits of the visionary leaders who guided Malaysia through its transformation, capturing the essence of their leadership.
