NSRC Reports RM203 Million Losses Over Scam Calls

The National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) has received 37,002 calls from scam victims, reporting a total loss of RM203.33 million as of May 2024, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Since its establishment on October 12, 2022, the NSRC has received a total of 95,094 calls from the public.

In a written reply published on the parliamentary website to a question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) about the NSRC’s effectiveness in combating online fraud, Anwar revealed that the Royal Malaysian Police have opened 10,649 investigation papers for fraud cases under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Additionally, 74 investigation papers for money laundering offenses have been opened, leading to the freezing of 637 accounts totaling RM72.38 million.

Anwar also noted that the NSRC, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has taken steps to block phone numbers used by scammers.

As of May 2024, 131 phone numbers have been terminated for involvement in fraudulent activities, and 112 suspicious phone numbers have been blocked.
