Lethal Cosmetics Removed From Retail by MOH

Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzi bin Abu Hassan, Chief Director of Health, issued a pressing advisory today through the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) concerning specific cosmetic products found to contain scheduled poisons.

In a statement, Radzi emphasized that products such as Ailas Wild Rose Petal Face Cream and Desha Night Cream have been identified with substances like Tretinoin and Mercury, both classified as scheduled poisons. Consequently, their product notifications have been revoked, barring their sale nationwide.

Mercury, known for its potential harm including kidney damage, nervous system disorders, and adverse effects on child brain development, is strictly prohibited in cosmetics. Tretinoin, a pharmaceutical substance requiring proper registration, can lead to skin reactions like redness, discomfort, and heightened sensitivity to sunlight if used without medical supervision.

Retailers and distributors have been instructed to immediately cease the sale and distribution of these cosmetics. Non-compliance with these regulations could result in substantial penalties under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984, including fines up to RM25,000 or imprisonment for up to 3 years, or both, for initial offences.

Consumers currently using these products are strongly advised to discontinue their use promptly and seek medical advice if they experience any discomfort or adverse reactions.

For verification of the notification status of any cosmetic product, consumers are encouraged to visit the NPRA’s official website at www.npra.gov.my or download the ‘NPRA Product Status’ application from the Google Play Store.

Radzi concluded by reaffirming the Ministry of Health’s commitment to public safety, urging all stakeholders to adhere strictly to these regulatory measures to protect the health and well-being of consumers.
