KL Population To Reach 9.8 Million By 2030

The population of Kuala Lumpur is projected to surpass 8.8 million, marking a 2.25 percent annual increase compared to last year, according to Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories). The number is expected to reach 9.8 million by 2030, prompting the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to enhance its planning and infrastructure strategies.

In her speech at the launch of the 10 Guidelines for Planning the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur 2024 at Menara 1 DBKL, Dr. Zaliha emphasized the need for DBKL to address the growing pressure on existing infrastructure due to both natural population growth and high rural-to-urban migration. She highlighted that challenges such as air pollution and a lack of green spaces also need urgent attention.

“Population growth in Kuala Lumpur requires us to provide better basic services and make the city more livable. We must balance development with the well-being of residents,” Dr. Zaliha said.

The new guidelines aim to ensure good governance and effective monitoring of development projects. They were developed through detailed research and consultations with various stakeholders. Dr. Zaliha expressed hope that these measures would positively impact city residents.

The guidelines include planning for MADAN residencies, vendor spaces, electric vehicle charging stations, and low-carbon buildings. They will be available to the public on the DBKL website for further reference.
