The private education services sector in Malaysia is experiencing significant expansion, according to the latest Economic Census 2023 data for the year 2022. The report highlights a remarkable surge in both the number of establishments and financial metrics since 2015.
In 2022, the sector boasted 18,242 establishments, marking a 6.5 per cent increase from the 11,722 establishments recorded in 2015. This growth reflects an expanding landscape in private education, covering a broad spectrum of services including pre-school, primary, secondary, vocational, and higher education, as well as sports, recreation, and cultural education.
Gross output for the sector reached RM24.1 billion in 2022, up 6.9 per cent from RM15.2 billion in 2015. This increase is mirrored by a rise in the value of intermediate input, which grew from RM5.8 billion to RM9.1 billion, reflecting a 6.6 per cent annual growth rate. The value added to the economy by the sector also saw a notable boost, climbing 7.0 per cent to RM15.1 billion from RM9.4 billion.
Employment within the sector grew to 186,354 individuals in 2022, a 4.8 per cent increase from the 134,361 engaged in 2015. This rise in employment contributed to a substantial increase in total salaries and wages, which reached RM6.3 billion in 2022, up 5.5 per cent from RM4.3 billion seven years earlier. Additionally, the value of fixed assets in the sector stood at RM21.0 billion, reflecting a 5.7 per cent increase from RM14.3 billion in 2015.
