Four mobile network operators (MNOs) have submitted bids to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to participate in the upcoming second 5G network rollout, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
The MNOs involved are CelcomDigi Bhd, Maxis Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd, and U Mobile Sdn Bhd.
Out of the five MNOs (excluding YTL Communications Sdn Bhd) that joined and signed share subscription agreements with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), four have now submitted tenders to compete for the second network.
“This matter is being managed by the MCMC, and I am not intervening. We hope the best companies and suppliers will win”, Fahmi stated during his keynote address at the Huawei Malaysia 2024 Supplier Ecosystem Convention on Thursday.
Fahmi further explained that the decision on the implementation of the second 5G network will be determined based on the bids submitted by the MNOs.
“We anticipate a decision will be reached within a reasonably short timeframe. I have not yet received information from the MCMC—they are handling it.”
“Let the process unfold, and we expect it to be finalised within this year…” after which we will make an announcement, he added.
