Former President Donald Trump has expressed interest in appointing Tesla CEO Elon Musk to a key position in his administration, should he be re-elected in November. This announcement follows a period of growing alignment between Trump and Musk, with the latter being a significant supporter of the former president.
In an interview with Reuters, Trump revealed that he is contemplating a cabinet or advisory role for Musk if he is willing to accept it. Musk has been actively engaged with Trump and recently suggested creating a “government efficiency commission” to oversee federal spending and reduce waste, expressing his interest in participating on such a board.
Musk responded to Trump’s comments with a tweet on X, featuring an image of himself in front of a podium labelled “Department of Government Efficiency” with the acronym “D.O.G.E.” — a nod to Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency Musk has previously endorsed. Musk affirmed his willingness to serve, stating simply, “I am willing to serve.”
In addition to considering Musk for a governmental role, Trump is also deliberating the future of federal subsidies for electric vehicles. The current $7,500 tax credit, introduced during the Biden administration, could be at risk under Trump’s potential presidency. Trump expressed scepticism about tax credits and incentives, indicating that while he supports electric vehicles, he also values traditional and hybrid cars.
Representatives for both Trump and Musk have yet to provide a comment on the matter.
