The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) and the Suruhanjaya Tenaga Malaysia (ST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster cooperation in the energy sector. The agreement, witnessed by Dato Sri Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, aims to enhance the mutual recognition of competency certificates and safety and efficiency rating labels issued by both organisations.
Key aspects of the MoU include the mutual recognition of ST Competency Certificates and a structured approach to equipment safety and energy efficiency. Since ECoS took over regulatory responsibilities for gas and electricity supply activities from ST on 10 January 2023 and 3 January 2024, respectively, holders of existing ST Competency Certificates have until 2 January 2025 to transition to equivalent certifications from ECoS.
To receive ECoS Competency Certification, current ST Competency Certificate holders must complete and pass specific courses: the Course on Gas Supply Enactment 2023 and Gas Supply Regulations 2023 for gas certificate holders, and the Course on Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 and Electricity Supply Regulations 2024 for electrical certificate holders.
The MoU also provides for the mutual recognition of Safety Labels and Energy Efficiency Rating Labels, establishing common standards for gas and electrical equipment to ensure quality and safety for users.
“This strategic partnership aims to streamline processes, promote efficiency, and ensure a harmonised approach to energy regulation across Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia, and the Federal Territory of Labuan. By collaborating, ECoS and ST seek to create a more competitive and sustainable energy landscape for all stakeholders,” said Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, Chief Executive Officer of ECoS.
