The Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) has become the first entity authorised to conduct motor vehicle inspections under the new framework established by Act 333. This new mandate allows Puspakom to provide designated inspection services both at their centres and through mobile units across the country.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that, effective immediately, Puspakom will continue its operations but will now face competition from other industry players. “Puspakom will operate as usual, but they will need to compete with other service providers. Everything they previously did can continue without interruption,” he stated during a press briefing today.
Loke also highlighted that Puspakom will no longer be the exclusive provider of periodic motor vehicle inspections for the Road Transport Department (JPJ) from 1 September 2024. This decision follows a Cabinet resolution from 17 March 2023, which decided to open the market for periodic vehicle inspections to all qualified parties.
The response from the industry has been encouraging, with nearly 50 companies expressing interest. Of these, two have formally applied for licences to become motor vehicle inspection service providers. The deadline for applications is 31 October this year.
Loke indicated that companies applying early will be evaluated sooner, stating, “The first companies to apply will undergo assessment first. Thus, those who apply earlier will receive their licences earlier.”
Regarding the requirements for becoming a licensed provider, Loke mentioned that applicants must meet several conditions. These include having suitable facilities, technical capabilities, and investments in machinery and equipment.
The Ministry of Transport will review all applications and announce the new successful providers shortly. JPJ will continue to oversee and regulate the provision of inspection services to ensure compliance with standards and regulations, maintaining the quality of service for customers.
