Penang Ready For Court Over Kedah’s Raw Water Payment Claims

The Penang State Government said it is still waiting for appropriate action from the Kedah State Government regarding the issue of raw water charges. Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow insisted that until now no legal action has been brought forward by the Kedah State Government regarding the matter.

“My answer is the same, it is up to the state of Kedah to take action, and we (the State Government) will provide an appropriate response related to this issue.

Chow said till now its just talk as of now, if it goes to court than the state will reply accordingly. This comes after Kedah state Chief Minister insists on Penang pay for the raw water which he claimed must be paid and intends to bring the issue to the court.

When asked about Penang’s chances of winning the case, Kon Yeow stated that there are various laws including international conventions that regulate the use of water resources.

“Ultimately, the court has to decide but there are indeed various laws and international conventions that control the use of water resources involving more than one country or state,” he said, who is also Exco for Finance, Economic Development & Land and Communications.

Earlier, Kon Yeow was also reported to have said that the Penang State Government has never received a claim through the legal process of the court regarding the issue even though it has been raised for a long time.
