German Economy Minister Robert Habeck expressed his intention on Friday to assist Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) in navigating a challenging period of cost-cutting while avoiding site closures. During his visit to the carmaker’s factory in Emden, he emphasised the importance of ensuring that personnel policy measures stay within the normal collective bargaining framework.
However, Habeck acknowledged that there are limits to the government’s ability to support Volkswagen, stating that the structure and viability of a business ultimately depend on company policy.
“A large part of the tasks have to be dealt with by Volkswagen itself,” he remarked to reporters. He added that politicians can contribute by enhancing the framework and providing the right market signals, which includes incentivising the transition to electric motors.
