Parts of Kedah, Penang, Terengganu and Johor are expected to experience thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds until 4pm today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
In Kedah, the affected areas are Kota Setar, Yan, Pendang and Kuala Muda, while in Penang, the warning covers the Southwest and Northeast districts as well as Seberang Perai Utara and Seberang Perai Tengah.
The warning also extends to Marang, Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu, and Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru in Johor.
MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when there are signs of thunderstorms producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour or when such conditions are expected to persist for more than an hour.
The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term advisories and remain valid for a maximum of six hours from the time of issuance.
