Inari Amertron Berhad has announced the redesignation of Datuk Phang Ah Tong as its new Independent and Non-Executive Chairman, effective June 9, 2026.
Phang, 69, succeeds the boardroom leadership role, replacing Tengku Puteri Kamala after serving as an Independent Director on Inari’s board since February 2018.
Phang brings extensive macroeconomic development and corporate governance experience to the semiconductor titan’s chair. His career in Malaysia’s civil service spans more than 36 years, primarily dedicated to driving foreign direct investment (FDI) and bolstering the country’s domestic industrial manufacturing framework.
He spent over three decades climbing the ranks at the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), ultimately retiring in 2017 as its Deputy Chief Executive Officer.
Throughout his tenure at MIDA, Phang was a key architect in formulating foreign investment pipelines into Malaysia. He spearheaded global trade and investment portfolios, led overseas ministerial missions, and co-crafted the nation’s inaugural Industrial Master Plan (IMP) in 1986.
Beyond his long tenure with MIDA, Phang’s expertise spans several prominent state agencies and commercial boards within the technology, automotive, and banking ecosystems. Serving at MARii, UOB Malaysia and MIDA.
Phang holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from the University of Malaya and completed advanced senior management programs at Harvard Business School and INSEAD in France.
Market analysts view his elevation to Chairman as a strategic move for Inari Amertron as the group continues to expand its high-tech chip assembly footprints and navigate complex global semiconductor supply chain shifts.
