Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has installed one million Smart Meters in Malacca and the Klang Valley, with more set to come this year. The initial rollout of Smart Meters started four years ago in Malacca.
Part of a government-led initiative, the rollout of Smart Meters across Malaysia is intended to enrich the lives of consumers by providing greater accessibility, transparency and control over their daily energy consumption.
“Despite the challenges of 2020, I am proud to say that we are well on track towards installing 1.5 million units by the end of 2021,” Baharin Bin Din, Chief Distribution Network Officer, TNB said.
“Heading into 2021, we hope to see more customers take control from using Smart Meters, and being empowered tomake energy-efficient choices for themselves and the nation as a whole, towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.” Baharin added.
TNB also reported a huge increase in the number of myTNB users from 1.4 million to 4.7 million, representing an increase of 236 percent from December 2019 – December 2020. myTNB is a platform that enables homeowners to view and pay their bills digitally, but its features have been enhanced over time.
While everyone is encouraged to download and use the myTNB app or visit the portal, it is especially beneficial to Smart Meter users, who in addition to being able to pay and view their bills, can also monitor their daily electricity usage.
TNB hopes to double down on the Smart Meter installation efforts in Klang Valley for the remainder of 2021, with plans to expand into other areas of Malaysia in the near future.
