Celcom Achieves Malaysia’s First Ever VoNR Trial Service

Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad

Celcom achieved a significant milestone in advancing 5G services by successfully initiating Malaysia’s First Voice-over 5G New Radio (VoNR) trial call. The 5G VoNR call was made between Celcom’s 5G trial sites at Kuah and Taman Berlian, Langkawi.

As part of the 5G Demonstration Project and innovation trial in Langkawi, Celcom validated its end-to-end 5G voice capability and 5G data session in parallel over a 5G Standalone (SA) network.

In a cloud-native 5G SA network, VoNR calls are established directly within a 5G network without relying on LTE technology. VoNR users will be able to enjoy seamless and high-definition voice calls while their smartphone maintains an ongoing 5G high-speed data connection for uninterrupted media downloads.

This next-generation voice calling achievement is a step towards realizing the full potential of 5G for consumers and enterprises, providing the foundation for services and application innovations such as immersive video conferencing and 5G interactions through augmented or virtual reality technologies.

Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Bhd said as Malaysia prepares for 5G launch by this year-end, this successful trial demonstrates Celcom’s continuous commitment to 5G innovation and readiness, providing high-quality 5G services. Celcom remains committed in advancing societies with the latest technology, accelerating the nation’s transformation towards an advanced digital economy.
