Human Resource Minister Addresses Foreign Worker Issues

Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said Malaysia has developed strict standard operating procedures (SOP) for the entry of foreign workers which covers four stages that will help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

According to him, the four stages include pre-departure, arrival, post-arrival (quarantine period), and post-quarantine. This was raised on the concern of the allowing of foreign workers to enter the country as the labour shortage faced by business is at a critical level.

“Foreign workers were required to be fully vaccinated in their country of origin and enter Malaysia using a special lane when they arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International airport.

“These workers would then be quarantined at certified quarantine centers before being taken to their respective workplaces and employers must provide a conducive accommodation as required under the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446),” he added.

To further enforce safety precautions, the Minister has informed that workers must undergo 14-day quarantine and be subjected RT-PCR COVID-19 test before being transferred to their respective workplaces.

“These four stages are crucial in ensuring a safe entry of foreign workers into the country,” he told reporters after the Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) graduation ceremony here today.

Malaysia is expecting to receive between 5,000 and 10,000 Indonesian workers next year to work in the construction and manufacturing industries, as well as domestic helpers.
