Westport Expects Throughput Shortfall Due To Flood Impact

Westports which is situated at the worst flood-hit district of Klang, Selangor has announced that the severity of the situation has impacted its business over the period.

The unexpected rainfall that is labeled as once in 100 years, caused much flooding in the state including some districts being overwhelmed, this resulted in authorities closing off roads and power utility operators shutting electricity to certain areas. Flash floods affected the vicinity of the port, its surrounding areas, some access roads, and residential areas in the Klang Valley and Pulau Indah.

According to Westport, the container and conventional facilities although not affected, however some of its staff were unable to report to work due to travel difficulties. The group added that these combined factors have adversely affected productivity and added some berthing delays. 

The port operator further highlighted that the cumulative effects could contribute to a throughput shortfall that would hinder the company from achieving the guided single-digit growth for 2021. Westports reports that currently, its container throughput volume is 10.12 million Twenty-foot equivalent units.

On the situation, Westport stated that it is working with the authorities and other industry players to mitigate the adverse impacts and will ensure uninterrupted operation. On the community front at Pulau Indah, Westports is repairing access roads, clearing fallen trees, providing accommodation and food to affected evacuees.
