China has offered its well-drilled Covid-19 busting template to Hong Kong which is facing its worst resurgence of the virus since 2020.
A senior health official from the Chinese mainland has put forward instructive suggestions on the response to the latest spike.
Wang Hesheng, deputy head of the National Health Commission, is proposing techniques applied by the mainland in curbing its own transmission. Both China and Hong Kong task force discussed ways of tackling the spread and bringing the situation under control.
Among the areas will be to improving nucleic acid testing capacity, increasing admission rates, reducing mortality rates, establishing makeshift hospitals, and providing medical supplies and daily necessities. The officer claims the current epidemic situation in Hong Kong is complicated and challenging, and both sides should maintain close communication, strengthen cooperation and act quickly to ensure that all anti-epidemic measures are effective.
Hong Kong has been inundated by the latest virus surge on the island, with borders closed and strict restrictions imposed since the early days, Carrie Lam’s government has failed to maintain China’s zero case policy and is witnessing all the efforts collapsing.
With the election coming, reports suggest the Chief Executive Officer will not be seeking another term, however, it’s perplexing why Hong Kong has not called on China for help. Recent news suggests the hospitals have been overwhelmed with over 100 percent capacity, the scene at some of these facilities resemble war zones and yet the government has been dragging its feet.
What’s worse is that only 75 percent of the population has taken more than one dose while booster shots have been administered to less than 20 percent of its citizens.
Like it or not, the situation could get worse if no assistance is rendered to the island, politics need to be set aside and lives should be the main priority right now!
