TNB Smart Meter Users Exceed 1.8 Million

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has successfully achieved its goal of installing 1.8 million units of smart meters in an effort to assist government initiatives to improve services to consumers.

“We have successfully surpassed the target of installing 1.8 million meters before the end of 2021 as a result of consumer cooperation and support from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA), the Energy Commission (ST), state governments, and local authorities.

“This success enables TNB to support the government’s efforts to improve services to consumers through the provision of better access, transparency, and energy consumption control.

“Thank you to consumers in the Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor and Melaka, who cooperated until we managed to install more than 1.8 million smart meters,” said TNB President and CEO, Datuk Ir. Baharin Din.

According to Baharin, the installation of this smart meter is one of the Grid of the Future initiatives where TNB needs to reinvest a total of RM9 billion to RM10 billion annually to modernize the National Grid.

“Grid of the Future adapts smart, automated and digital technologies to ensure maximum efficiency, reliability, and sustainability while supporting future energy sustainability.”

Baharin said more and more consumers were interested in empowering themselves in monitoring and managing energy consumption and reducing their carbon footprint due to the increased awareness of energy-wise and preserving the environment.

Through smart meters and a combination of myTNB portal and application, users can monitor consumption patterns in Ringgit Malaysia or kilowatt-hours (kWh), view current consumption notifications at the end of the billing cycle, as well as the impact of energy consumption on the environment.

“To utilize smart meter information and reduce carbon footprint emissions effectively, consumers can adopt energy efficiency tips that can be browsed at http://www.tnb.com.my/.

“We hope that consumers can take full advantage of the smart meter facility to jointly achieve the goal of Better World. Brighter Lives.”

TNB started installing smart meters four years ago in Melaka. Its installation will be further expanded in the Peninsula in stages so that 9.1 million customers will benefit from smart meters by 2026, Baharin added.
