Nenggiri Hydroelectric Dam Ignites TNB’s Green Energy Mission

Tenaga Nasonal Berhad has broke ground at the Nenggiri Hydroelectric Project, in Gua  Musang Kelantan as the power company looks to add another plant into its green energy  generation supply system.  

When operational, it will contribute an average of 600-Gigawatt-hour per year and will be avoiding the emissions of as much of  355,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) if were to be compard to a fossil fuel plant. 

TNB adds the RM5 billion project will generate 300MW when completed in 2026 and bring multiplied benefits to Kelantan not only in terms of reducing the effects of floods and droughts, but can also stimulate various  economic activities in the vicinity. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said, the Nenggiri hydroelectric scheme will increase the renewable energy generation capacity in Peninsular Malaysia, in line with TNB's role in moving  the country's energy industry transition.


A Special Purpose Vehicle which is also a wholly owned subsidiary of TNB Genco, TNBPG Hydro Nenggiri Sdn. Bhd. will complete the project within 52  months. The project which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 
Agenda by the United Nations has taken the resettlement of the Orang Asli community seriosly, and have been offered with quality facilities such as clean water supply, electricity, sewage treatment system, driveways, clinics, multipurpose halls, school complexes, shop houses, sports and recreational facilities.

Additionaly, TNB anticiates the project to bring potential economic activity that could offer more employment and business opportunities in various fields such as construction, food and retail, as well as new industries such as eco-tourism and aquaculture,

However more crucually, the projet that will assist the State in mitigating flood issues that has cause much hardship for the people in the area is the most anticipated said Kelantan Menteri Besar Dato Ahmad Yakob. This will be achieved
 through the existence of the main reservoir lake with 53.84 square kilometers and water flow control pool that is 0.97 square kilometers.


Upon completion the Hydoelectric dam will hold rain water during the monsoon season and help mitigate heavy run off that causes flood in the low lands. Additionalt the multi functional water reservation system could also be a reservoir of fresh water which can be supplied to residents in Kelantan. 


TNB assures the project has been studied and vetted for its impact, among them incldue the Environment Impact Assessment, Social Impact Assessment and Heritage Impact Assessment.
