Perodua Maintains Year End Target Of 247,800 Units Despite Supply Challenges

Malaysia’s number one car maker recorded a whopping 127,343 sales of vehicles for the first half of the year constituting a 30% jump from 97,290 units sold from January to June 2021.

Attributing to the sales tax exemption for being the extraordinary sales, of the 127,343 units registered Myvi continues to be the most popular model with 38,039 units registered followed by the Perodua Axia with 29,183 units and the Perodua Bezza at 28,719 units.

“There was a significant rush in vehicle booking especially when the government extended the registration period to 31 March 2023 and we thank Malaysians for choosing Perodua as their brand of choice,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said.

The group recorded its highest single booking day on 30 June 2022 with 25,100 vehicle orders as consumers rushed to save from the SST exemption.

Dato’ Zainal said that the increase in registration in June 2022 was also due to better parts supply compared to the month of May.

However, the company is also facing challenges from lack of skilled labour and parts shortages which are still prevalent, manufacturers worldwide are facing supply chain shocks due to lockdowns and commodity price hikes. Customers who had placed orders for their cars have been waiting longer than usual due to these issues.

Dato’ Zainal said Perodua has taken steps including working closely with suppliers and in some cases providing staff to work at their premises to ensure that parts supply continues to flow.

“That being said, we hope that the manpower issue can be resolved quickly as the impact to the industry and to some extent the country is significant,” he said.

The car giant attests that while on the parts shortage, it is having continuous communication with its suppliers and partners as to find alternative components.

However, despite these challenges, Perodua is still maintaining its full-year sales target of 247,800 units.
