Anti-Party Hopping Law To Come Into Force Ahead Of GE15

The Constitution (Amendment) (No. 3) Act 2022 that prohibits Members of Parliament from switching parties will come into force soon, ahead of the imminent 15th General Election (GE15), according to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said the act, which had obtained the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, however, has yet to have a specific date of enforcement.

“The Act will come into force before the GE15. So, just be patient. I will announce it when the time comes,” he said when asked whether or not the Act would be enforced if the Parliament is dissolved sooner.

Mindef plans to set up Defence Investment Committee to manage asset procurement

The Defence Ministry plans to form a Defence Investment Committee as part of efforts to prevent and avoid irregularities in the procurement of assets by the ministry.

Its deputy minister, Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz said the setting up of the committee was among the recommendations in the Defence White Paper.

Environmental Quality (Amendment) 2022 bill tabled in Dewan Rakyat

The Environmental Quality (Amendment) 2022 Bill, aimed at increasing the penalty to not more than RM10 million for offences such as placing or disposing of scheduled waste other than at the prescribed premises, was tabled for the first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Based on the bill to amend the Environmental Quality Act 1974, any individual found guilty of committing the offence could be jailed not exceeding five years and fined not less than RM100,000.

The Act defines disposal of waste as that of scheduled waste in the form of solids, semi-solids, liquids, gases or steam indiscriminately which can cause pollution.

More than 76,000 members of response agencies on standby for floods

A total of 76,336 officers and members of the disaster response agencies at all levels,  including the districts, are fully prepared for possible floods during the northeast monsoon season.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Function) Datuk Mastura Mohd Yazid said also on standby were a total of 22,622 land, water and air assets, as well as medicine.

The Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), she said, had also set up 1,312 rainfall and water level telemetry stations, 526 flood warning sirens as well as 1,571 straight gauges and 184 mobile pumps for monitoring and early warning purposes.
