Budget 2023: Protecting Land And Ocean

In commenting on the tabling of Budget 2023, conservation group Amanah Lestari (ALAM) CEO Wan faizah Che Din said ALAM stands committed to playing an active role and providing support to the Government in meeting the commitments made in relation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She welcomes Budget 2023 and its focus on green growth and sustainable development, greater protection and enhancement of the well-being of society at all levels, as well as ensuring the proper management of the natural resources and preservation of the environment.

  • ALAM, a company limited by guarantee spearheaded by Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB), is the entity named under 12MP to support the implementation of the environment- and sustainability-related education initiatives and awareness programmes through communication, education, and public awareness (CEPA) initiatives are ready to participate in the initiatives highlighted in the budget with special focus on steering mindset and behavioural change in society.
  • Responding to the announcement, ALAM acknowledged the Government’s holistic budget that promotes the proper management of natural resources and preservation of the environment with the announcement of allocations for nationwide clean rivers initiatives, setting up forest restoration projects, preservation of endangered species and upgrading EV infrastructure, tax incentives for manufacturing, support for planetary health, among others.
  • ALAM also applauds the Government’s commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the targets under the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the pledge to be a Net-Zero GHG Emissions Nation by as early as 2050. The Budget also re-affirms this by allocating RM20 million for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and all-party Parliament Group to push forward the SDG goals as a collaborative initiative between the Government, communities, and industries. 
  • The group is confident that this will support global’s initiatives towards the Government of Malaysia to commit to Protecting at least 30% (land & ocean) of the planet by 2030; Helping mobilise financial resources to ensure protected areas are properly managed, and Approach biodiversity conservation in a way that fully integrates and respects indigenous leadership and indigenous rights

Many of the aspects listed above are also in line with its existing initiatives the PROTECT 30X30 Campaign for Nature. ALAM is also hopeful that the Government’s efforts will continue to steer Malaysia into achieving the 2030 UN SDGs
