PM Anwar Gives 2 Weeks For B40 Targeted Subsidy Formula To Be Presented

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his official meeting with members of the National Action Council on Cost of Living has given government agencies 2 weeks to review and give an analysis of the current government subsidy program which he said is being enjoyed by everyone including the T20.

Subsidies borne by the government like the electricity bill subsidy is being enjoyed by all groups even though these are supposedly for only the poor.

“They have to be targeted, I have no problem with subsidies for the people, especially for those who are in need, but they have to be targeted.”

Malaysia spends about RM70 billion in subsidies including petrol, cooking oil, electricity, flour, and sugar, the previous administration also proposed cutting subsidies with a target-based option due to rising commodity prices.

Anwar said the comprehensive report produced will be analysed after the formation of his new cabinet which the PM added will not be too long.
